- - The left hand frame is a directory map of your "local" computer (the one you are sitting at right now). WS_FTP calls this your Local System.
- - The right hand frame is a drectory map of your remote Virtualis server. WS_FTP calls this your Remote System. In this right hand frame you will see the name of the directory you are in. It should read "/usr/www/USERNAME".
- - Moving to the default directory Click on the folder marked "HTML" if you are publishing html or graphic files. This will bring you to the "/usr/www/USERNAME/httpd/htdocs" directory. This is where you will publish your web site.
- - Note : Your main page must be named "index.html". Transferring files over.
- - Now you are ready to begin moving your files onto your server.
- - There are two methods of file transfer : ASCII - Used with text based files (.html, .htm, .txt, .pl, etc.) Binary - For binary based files (.jpg, .gif, .exe, .doc, .avi, etc).
- - If you are moving over an entire folder of information, instead of one file at a time, then you can select the Auto check box.
- Understanding Permissions
When adding new files such as CGI, Perl, etc. it is necessary to set specific permissions for the script to work. Before the release of the VSA 2.7 you were faced with opening a difficult telnet session in order to make these changes with the "chmod" command or with your FTP client. Now you can set your file permissions right in your File Manager.To change file permissions in your VSA File Manager, choose your file from the file drop down list, select Properties from the Action Menu and click on GO.

The UNIX file structure has a system of permissions. You have permission to read this file, you have permission to write to this file, you have permission to execute this file. However, you are not always you. Unix splits identities into three categories. The first is you, the owner of the file. The second, the group you belong to. And third, other is the world, basically anyone who comes to your web site.
- To change permissions you must issue a "change mode command", or more commonly referred to as the UNIX command "chmod". The documentation for your file or script will usually come with the proper permissions you need to set for your program to work. To set permissions, there are basically three methods UNIX recognizes.
- Select Permissions
- The first is the method used by your VSA as well as several popular FTP programs. Simply check the read, write, and execute abilities for each group, submit your changes and your done. With the VSA, the existing permissions for your file is displayed as checkmarks in the appropriate boxes when you check your file properties.
- With FTP your file properties are shown as-rwxr-xr-x. The first space designates if this is a directory by the letter "d". The next three characters designate the permissions for the "owner", r = read, w = write, and x = execute if the permission is set to "on" and "-" is the permission is set to off. Permissions for the "group" and "world" (other) are designated by characters 5-7 and 8-10 respectively.
- Alpha Method
- The second method we are calling the alpha method because permissions are set, by way of a telnet session, using alpha characters. You simply specify with the group or groups whose settings you want to change ("u" represents "user" or you, "g" represents "group", "o" represents other or world and "a" represents "all") and all the settings you want to change ("r" for read access, "w" for write access, and "x" for execute access). To set your file world-writable, you would type "chmod o+w ". To set it executable to everyone, you would use "chmod a+x ". The plus sign indicates you're adding permissions. You can use a minus sign to remove permissions.
- Numerical Method
- The third and probably the most common method seen today is the numerical method. This is a three digit number you use to specify all the permission settings in one chmod command. The first digit represents the file's owner (you), the second its group, and the third the world at large. Read, write, and execute permisions each have values of 4, 2, and 1 respectively. You add up these values to get the total for each of the three catagories. For example, for a file which has a permission of 755, the owner of the file can read, write, and execute (7 = 4 + 2 + 1), and the group & world can both read and execute (5=4 + 1)
- For troubleshooting purposes it is often handy to set your permissions to "777" in order to eliminate permission settings as part of a problem. However, it is not a good idea to leave them this way as it presents a potential security risk. Note: Some scripts will require permissions set to "777" in order to work correctly.

- For you to better understand which boxes to check in the VSA, here is some equivalent commands to the ones which may be provided with your script documentation.
- * New files created on your server have permissions of u+w,a+r (766), alpha codes only elevate permissions from this base permission setting.
- POP Email Accounts
- Unlimited POP Accounts
- Tired of mail problems with your ISP? Have "name@yourdomain.com" email addresses and store the mail on our reliable fast servers. Email POP accounts are a snap to create with our new VSA Email Manager.
- POP Accounts are mailboxes that are stored on your server. Any email software (Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus...etc.) can easily send or retrieve mail from any of your POPs. To learn more about setting up your email client please visit VSA. In the POP Accounts section of your communications center is a drop down list of you POP Accounts which appear in this format: owner's name | username | password
- The first POP listed is your default Main POP and cannot be changed.
- It is your username (created by the first eight characters of your domain name) @yourdomain.ext. This is your complimentary mailbox at Virtualis Systems.
- Within the POP Account section of your Email Manager you can :
- - Add POP accounts
- - Edit your POP accounts
- - Delete POP accounts
- Adding POP accounts
- To add a POP mailbox choose Add POP from the Action menu and click on GO.
- In the boxes which appear on the next screen enter the required information.
- The owners name is the person that mail will be sent to from this address.
- The account is the first part of your email address (the part before @).
- This can be anything you want up to eight characters but must be unique. Enter a password for this account, click on Go and your POP account is set up. If you host multiple domains on your server you can choose which domain your new POP Account is created for.
- When you create a POP account an email alias that points to that POP is also created. Thus, when email is sent to this alias the mail will instantly be placed into the POP account box.
- Email Client setup
- To set up your email software (Netscape, Eudora, Pegasus...etc.) to receive your mail you must enter specific information in each programs setup function.
- Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
- You must tell your email client the name of your outgoing mail server or sometimes referred to as SMTP. For the domain name "yourdomain.ext" your outgoing mail server should be set to : --> mail.yourdomain.ext Just replace "yourdomain" with your full domain name and ".ext" with your domain name extension. (.com, .net, .org, etc.)
You can use any outgoing mail server you wish. The one provided to you by Virtualis Systems with your server, or the SMTP server you use with your ISP.
- Incoming mail server (POP3)
In order to receive your email from your server, you must enter the name of your incoming or POP3 server. For the domain name "yourdomain.ext" your incoming server should be set to : --> mail.yourdomain.ext Just replace "yourdomain" with your full domain name and ".ext" with your domain name extension. (.com, .net, .org, etc.)
- ALIASES E-Mail Accounts
- Unlimited E-Mail Aliases
- Use our simple VSA¢â E-Mail Manager to create forwarding addresses of "name@yourdomain.com". Email sent to these addresses can then be forwarded to the email address of your choice (such as your ISP). Have multiple addresses going to only one mailbox !
- In the Alias section of your communications center is a drop down list of all your aliases and other addresses. On the left hand side in capital letters is the type of email address (ALIAS, POP, DUMP, AUTO, etc.). Next in line is your alias address. Your alias then points to its destination on the right side. This is the way aliases work. Email sent to an alias address is forwarded to another destination. You can forward your email aliases to basically anywhere. For example, to an existing alias, to additional POP Accounts you set up, or even to your email address provided to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Within the Alias section of your Email Manager you can :
- - Add E-Mail aliases
- - Edit your E-Mail aliases
- - Delete E-Mail aliases
- Adding email aliases
- To add an alias, start by selecting Add Alias from the Action menu and clicking on "GO". On the next screen first you enter the name you wish to use. The next box will show your domain name. If you are hosting multiple domain names on your server, each domain name is listed here, just select the one you want. The last step is to choose your destination. Select which type of address your destination address is by clicking the adjacent radio button, then either select or type in your destination address.
- For Mid server and higher. When you add an Alias, previously it would give you 3 choices where to point the alias to. Now there is a fourth option, MRA (Multi-Recipient Alias). Just choose MRA as the destination and enter as many addresses as you wish. Addresses must be one per line and in the form address@domain.ext with no other information.
- Editing email aliases
- You can edit, or change the destination, of any email alias you have set up by selecting the alias from your list of aliases and choosing Edit Alias from the Action menu. Don't forget to click on GO. Just remove the exisiting destination address and enter your new destination address. When you're done, click on GO and your new alias address is created.
- Note: Aliases you add or edit will appear in you drop down box but will not work until the server updates (currently every 15 minutes).
- Deleting email aliases
- To delete an alias first select the alias you wish to delete from the drop-down box, then choose Delete Alias from the Action Menu and click on GO. Your alias is deleted.
- MRAs - Multiple Recipient Aliases
The email manager has a few great new features. One of these is the multiple recipient alias (MRA). An MRA is email alias that forwards on to multiple email addresses. This means you can set any of your email addresses, such as webmaster@yourdomain.com, to automatically forward mail to multiple places, such as both your AOL and Earthlink account, at one time. - Dump Account Email Feature
If someone mis-addresses email or sends it to a non-existent email address it bounces back to them and never reaches you. Now with our new Dump Account feature of our VSA¢â Email Manager have all this "lost" email sent to the right account.
- Dump Account
- What's a dump account you ask? Have you ever missed mail someone said they sent only to find out later it was misaddressed. Well this is what a dump account is for. Any mail sent to your domain which is misaddressed and does not match any of your aliases or POPs is automatically sent to the alias address you designate for your dump account. Just think, no more missed mail. You will get anything and everything sent to your domain. If you host multiple domains, you can set up individual dump accounts for each domain. Just choose the domain when setting up your dump account.

- An Auto Responder is an automated message, you create, that gets sent out whenever someone sends an email to a specific email address. Creating auto responders using our VSA Auto Response Manager is simple! Our MINI option comes with one Auto Responder, all higher options have unlimited Auto Responders !
- Creating your auto responder
- To create your Auto Responder, start off by entering the email "name" you wish to use in the empty box. The name you use must be a unique name different than any alias or pop you already have. If you host multiple domains on your server, choose the domain name you wish to create your Auto Responder for. When you're done, click on the GO button on the Create Auto Responder line. On the next screen, fill in your custom information in the boxes.
- Send Copy To Email:
- If you put an email address in this box, each time someone sends an email to your Auto Responder a "Silent Copy" of the request will be sent to this address. Great for real time tracking !
- From Email
- The email address you enter in this line will be what your recipients will see as the origination address of your Auto Responder email. Any email address can be used here.
- Reply To Email
- The email address you enter in this line will be what your recipients will use when replying to your message. Any email address can be used here.
- Subject
- Enter the subject of your message. This will appear on the subject line of your recipients email.
- Auto Responder Text
- Enter your message here. You can format your message in any way you wish. To separate lines use your return key, otherwise enter your text continuously. Your text will automatically be wrapped to the next line. When you have everything entered just the way you want, click on GO at the bottom of your screen. Your Auto Responder is now created. You will also notice your new Auto Responder email address is now listed in your Email Manager alias list.
- How to secure the directory
- Select A Directory
- You first need to choose the existing secured or not secured directory on your server you want to add or delete security for. Simply select the directory from the drop down list and press Go. You are then taken to the add/delete security screen for your chosen directory. You will notice only directories in your web root (/httpd/htdocs) are listed. These are the only directories which are viewable by the world-wide-web. You must choose a directory form either list, not both. For example, if you choose a directory from the Secured Directory list, the Not Secured Directory List must show "- - Choose Directory - -".
- Adding An Authorized User
- To add a user and create security for your selected directory, go to the Add Security side of your entry form, insert the username and password you want to use for access to this directory. If the current directory already has security, your new username/password pair will be added to the list on the right. If not, a new list will be created. When your ready click on the GO button and your username and password must now be used to access this directory. You may assign as many username/passwords as you wish.
- More about Security
- By assigning a username and password to a directory only people who are given access by you will be able to visit or view the files in this directory. Many sites on the Web employ some method of password protection to keep unauthorized visitors out. The most commonly seen type is this one.
- What kind of security does the VSA use ?
- The VSA employs the popular ".htaccess" security. With .htaccess, when the browser requests a Web document, the Web Server firsts look for a ".htaccess" file in the directory your file is in. If an .htaccess file is found, then the Web Server queries the browser for a username and password. If the username/password entered matches one of the username/password pairs referenced in the password file by the ".htaccess" file then the page is delivered to the browser.
- But where are the passwords ?
- The .htaccess file does not actually contain the usernames and passwords. It has a variable called: AuthUserFile that points to a file with the username/password pairs in them. In this file, the passwords are heavily encrypted, and they are decoded in real time by the server to see if there is a successful match (from the username/password pair sent by your browser). These encrypted files are stored in VSA configuration files deep in your server where they cannot be accessed with a browser.
